Located on the Virginia Peninsula, Hampton is the home to the oldest African American museum in the United States. With over 9000 artifacts that include African, Native American, Native Hawaiian and Asian pieces, the Hampton University Museum, is described as an educational and edifying attraction. There are several companies in Hampton that offer boat tours and fishing around Chesapeake Bay, and the Cousteau Society has a gallery on the waterfront that showcases the oceanographic work of the prominent underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau.
